Hotel bid grants Perth City Hall a stay of execution
Plans to transform the former Perth City Hall into a five star hotel have granted a last minute reprieve to the threatened landmark following submission of new plans by Simpson & Brown.

Perth & Kinross councillors have unanimously voted to accept the viability of the scheme after earlier pushing for demolition as the only option, transforming the plot into a civic square.

Backed by Historic Scotland the Perth City Grand vision has been prepared on behalf of the Seventy Group although questions remain as to how the project will be financed. It would entail remodeling the B-listed structure internally to house 32 rooms, a restaurant, bar, banquet hall and outdoor terrace.

External alterations will be limited to the insertion of first floor bedroom windows although internally the main hall will require to be subdivided, with tiered balconies removed to provide additional bedroom spaces.

Malcolm Smith, planning consultant for the Seventy Group, said: “The foyer and stairs will remain as they are. We will be very careful to keep as much of the intrinsic character. What we want is the least intrusion with the most benefits.”

Actually, this might work. While Perth doesn't really need more shops, it is in dire need of a decent hotel, and providing they can sort the parking this could be a terrific boost to the Perth economy, as well as a sensible use of a grand old building. Good luck to them.
