Planning sought for latest phase of Quartermile
CDA Architects have submitted plans to convert the North and South Sidney Mitchell buildings at Lister Square, Edinburgh, into new residential accommodation with ground floor commercial space in the latest phase of the on-going Quartermile master plan.

It details raising the area between the two buildings to form a level extension of the existing square, providing a mix of public commercial spaces and areas offering greater privacy. Central to this plan is a series of ground floor commercial unit extensions which will take the place of the present clutter of extensions, infilled openings and canopy’s.

In their design statement CDA said: “The simple articulated glass and louvered facades of the new extensions with active frontages, wrap around at ground level allowing the existing brick infilled areas and irregular openings to be rationalised and opened up to function for commercial use; as now internal the stone/infill if retained will no longer be visible. The extension height will be dictated by the existing stone coursing below level 1 slab. The new build proposals, through careful material selection and detailing seek to contrast and compliment the features of the existing category B listed, Scots Baronial style buildings.

“Through treating each building as a standalone building without any physical connecting link, allows a new central public thoroughfare to be formed, connecting to the proposed office development west of the application sites and further enhancing the permeability of the site."

Eek - are they really ignoring the fine architecture above with a wrap around - couldn't this element go between the buildings ?
