ICA submit Townhead student housing plan
ICA Architects have submitted plans to demolish an existing office block on St James Road, Glasgow, to make way for new student accommodation with ground floor commercial uses.

Designed to introduce urban edge and scale to a fragmentary quarter of the city centre the scheme will offer improved connections to the neighbouring Strathclyde University campus and Cathedral Street Gardens.

Composed of two interconnecting ‘L’ shaped blocks framing two external courtyards the scheme will provide 422 bedrooms together with a coffee shop, exhibition space, meeting rooms and laundrette.

In their design statement ICA write: “The external finish is predominantly brick which reflects the urban scale and materiality of the Library building opposite. The proposal also seeks a mirror the grid of openings within the library by pairing two openings within a larger format element (this is an echo of the paired slot-like openings of the library).

“Upon approach from the Royal Infirmary the mass of the building is broken down by removing the ground floor corner brick pier which has the effect of opening up the building and re-addressing this once important junction.”
Extensive public realm works will knot the scheme into the surrounding urban fabric

"Designed to introduce urban edge and scale to a fragmentary quarter of the city centre".

Commendable ambition for what is indeed a fragmentary (and somewhat unsettling?) quarter

Have been having a look at this on the Planning Portal - it looks good. The plan of the building(s) work well. This area of the city needs something to pull it up a little, and this could work well.

This is a massive development overshaddowing the new community hub and gardens that it will overshaddow. What a pity those who worked so hard for the community hub and gardens had not foreseen this.

Lovely building - but it will have more impact than just the stunning change to St James Road.

Oh well if it looks good to hell with the residents, we have already had to put up with the present build of the new campus build, Townhead is already over run with students throwing all night parties, we were not consulted about the. Present build becuase we have a community council that is totally useless now we will have our lives disrupted with more construction, there is nothing wrong with the "Quarter" apart from the assumptions of those that don't live here, I hope this time there will be a proper consultation period before the build is confirmed.
