Lairdsland Primary pioneers new ‘reference’ school design
A sod-cutting ceremony has taken place at the site of Lairdsland Primary School in Kirkintilloch as East Dunbartonshire Council and Hub West Scotland commence delivery of the £7.7m build, replacing an existing Victorian school.

Part funded by the Scottish Government to the tune of £2.5m the school has been designed by Walters and Cohen Architects and features a design that can be modified for delivery elsewhere dependant on local requirements and school rolls.

Gemma Boggs, schools programme director at Scottish Futures Trust said, “When this school opens, it will provide a modern, inspirational place for young people to learn. Importantly, all local authorities across Scotland have access to the two reference primary school designs which can be easily adapted for their own particular needs, saving money and time.”

Morgan Sindall is main contractor on the 11 classroom school which will be ready for occupancy by summer 2015.
Each classroom has a quiet formal learning area and informal project space

Looks nothing like the original scheme which won out against Reiach & Hall Architects.

I like it however I have to query the shading impact within the first floor classrooms of the large 5m roof overhangs above the external teaching spaces. I also question the long term weathering effects on the expanse of white render.

You only have to walk 100 meters up the road to see how bad the white render will look. The Kirkintilloch Learning Centre looks a sorry state. Canal side locations and white render are poor bedfellows
