Lanark Primary School opens its doors to pupils
South Lanarkshire Council has opened the doors of the latest school to be delivered under its modernisation programme, Lanark Primary.

The £5m school was built by Kier Construction and designed by Paul Stallan, when he led the Paul Stallan Studio at RMJM, on the same site as the old school. It incorporates nine classrooms, a dining hall, assembly room and nursery.

Externally the playground has been designed with a multi-use games area pitch, as well as an external learning zone that includes a nature trail and soft play areas.

The internal layout of the school has been carefully arranged so as to create a range of flexible general purpose spaces as well as spaces for IT, a library and spaces for learning.

Kier has previously helped deliver St Cadoc’s Primary and Maxwellton Primary.

I find Paul Smith's shirts inspirational too. Cool.

The kids have been in for about 2 months now and it's been interesting to hear how a some of them don't like it and prefer the ramshackle old school in Carluke that was there temporary base for last couple years... just shows that whilst some architects will be patting themselves on the back for their flair it can go unappreciated by the end users.

As a kid I remember hating when my folks did up the house cos they went from very laid back about pushing pins in walls to hang up sheets to make a den to very uptight and making us take our shoes off and tidy up all the time - I wonder how much of the kids reaction could be down to their level of comfort in the place and the freedom they have to personalise it... I can't see a peice of 'art' on the walls yet, just plastic corners to stop the kids scuffing the decor

Interesting comment STW - my son goes to Lanark Primary and absolutely loves the new school and facilities. Certainly an improvement on the old school.

Ben, it's always the same with end users (kids or adults) some will embrace change some won't... but kids (esp 5/6 yo's) tend to have a very straight forward and often amusing honesty about things where adults would be a more diplomatic about it
