Working alongside architects Arkitema and professor Christoffer Harlang the engineering studio saw off 52 rival entries to secure the 45m kroner commission.
Incorporating an exhibition room, café and educational rooms the centre is designed to cater for an estimated half a million visitors each year and will be finished in a simple materials palette of wooden floors, glazing and thick concrete walls.
The 13th century castle is northern Europe’s largest medieval fortification and occupies a dramatic spot 74m above sea level on the island of Bornholm in the Baltic Sea.
