Grays School of Art, one of the few Miesian steel and glass buildings in Scotland, is in danger of being demolished by Robert Gordon University as part of a £120m pound redevelopment plan.

The Garthdee campus masterplan calls for creation of a new art school building and the decant of students from the existing Garthdee Road building in 2015 so that the site can be cleared for a new-build home.

In an effort to stymy these plans however an application has been lodged with Historic Scotland to grant the building special status, thus thwarting any demolition move.

A spokeswoman for Historic Scotland said: “Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen has been proposed for listing and we have conducted a site visit. We are currently carrying out research to establish whether it meets the criteria for listing.”

The demolition threat follows concern that Strathclyde University’s architecture building may also fall foul of a wrecking ball.
