Kelvin Hall museums plan secures £4.5m lottery boost
Plans to convert Glasgow’s Kelvin Hall to house the Scottish Screen Archive, civic collections and Glasgow University’s Hunterian Museum, have taken a step forward after the project secured £4.5m of lottery funding.

Developed by GCC, Glasgow Life, the University and the National Library of Scotland, the scheme will create display space for around 1.5m objects currently kept in storage around the city.

In addition a suite of cultural, research and conservation facilities will be incorporated; allowing the public to gain a glimpse into the conservation process.

Colin McLean, head of the Heritage Lottery Fund in Scotland, said: "The Kelvin Hall is a hugely popular building, much-loved by the people of Glasgow and beyond so it is fitting that the lottery-playing public have had a hand in securing its future.

"This is a groundbreaking project which brings together civic, university and national heritage collections for the first time in the UK."

A digital portal will also be created to allow exhibits to be viewed online, including Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s original interiors for Mrs Cranston’s Ingram Street tea rooms.

Sports facilities will continue to operate in the venue throughout the work, posing a logistical challenge for architects Page\Park.
