Glasgow Institute of Architects (GIA) are inviting entries from design professionals and students to produce concept designs for a new green bridge at the Seven Lochs Wetland Park, a new destination for outdoor recreation on the edge of the city at Gartloch.

The brief calls for a ‘green link’ to provide connection between Drumpellier Country Park and Commonhead Moss within the park, both of which are currently separated by the M73.

Instead, it is intended to be an ‘innovative and iconic’ structure as well as enhance connectivity across an area of natural wetland extending to 20km2.

Submissions are expected to address connectivity between wetland and woodland habitats through use of lighting, materials, way finding and interpretation.

GIA vice president Michael Dougall, said: “Our recent  Conversations  project  investigated  the  issue  of  infrastructure  and  its  effect  on  connectivity  and public space. Whilst our street workshops and consultation events focused on the impact of the M74 and M8 within Glasgow city centre, 'Connecting the Seven Lochs' requires similar thinking to bridge the M73 creating new opportunities for the local communities and wider green network.”

A closing date for entrants has been set for 14 October with the winning team/individual then being appointed to develop their entry through a feasibility study – subject to funding.

The competition is being organised in tandem with Glasgow and Clyde Valley Green Network Partnership and Central Scotland Green Network.
