Castle Rock Edinvar submit revised Calton Road plans
Castle Rock Edinvar Housing Association has applied to increase the number of homes and improve the materials specification in their new housing led scheme at Calton Road, Edinburgh.

Prepared by Comprehensive Design Architects the application calls for an increase in the 36 homes currently consented to 41, by removing one of three approved commercial units, across three individual residential blocks.

The ground course of these will be faced with blue/grey brickwork (supplanting reconstituted stone panels) with contrasting white brick above replacing previously consented render to provide a more durable finish.

An irregular sequence of windows are punched through this façade with communal residential areas will be highlighted through use of glazed yellow bricks.

A setback zinc clad roof element provides additional accommodation and a landscaped courtyard, modelled on those commonly found in the Old Town, provides amenity.

For being in the Old Town of Edinburgh, something more vernacular would have been a treat. The boring design could be anywhere. Some Crow steps and felmish gables would have lifted the bland flats.
