Revamped Hamilton Bus Station officially unveiled
Hamilton’s revamped bus station has been officially unveiled following an extensive redevelopment undertaken by Austin-Smith:Lord on behalf of Strathclyde Partnership for Transport and South Lanarkshire Council.

Incorporating a new bus apron, fully covered stances, an operations building, ticket office, crew lounge and retail unit the facility required a rerouting of the local road network reconfiguration of a neighbouring car park.

A new concourse sheltered by glazed canopies provides pedestrian connections to the town centre and train station with improved signage incorporated throughout to enhance wayfinding.

Graham Ross, Partner at architects Austin-Smith: Lord said: “The project provides an enhanced passenger experience with a safe station environment that separates, where possible, pedestrians and vehicles.

“Passenger comfort and facilities have been improved in line with SPT’s promotion of sustainable public transport provision. We hope that the new Bus Station encourages increased patronage of the local public transport network and enhances access to the town centre.”

Construction was carried out by Bowmer & Kirkland and managed by Turner & Townsend with engineering undertaken by Aecom.

As the bus station has been in operation for one year now I have experienced using the said station through every season; in general it is a vast improvement on the previous waiting area , however, winter was the real test. As you are no doubt familiar with the design of the project I hope my explanation of the down side of the new passenger waiting area will be familiar to you. Firstly the gap of approximately three inches which is directly behind the seats in the bus stance is just the perfect height for blowing both wind and rain on the neck of anyone sitting there, also being metal seats, rain that is blown through the gap
soon makes seats impossible to sit on due to little puddles which gather.
Apart from this flaw in design everything else is most acceptable
