Proposals to erect an office development adjacent to the deepest man-made hole in Europe, Rubislaw Quarry, have been approved by planners at Aberdeen City Council.

Carterra Private Equities submitted plans for a new five storey pavilion block designed by Michael Gilmour Associates back in January, creating 9,452sq/ft of space on a narrow strip of land at the quarries edge.

A rooftop restaurant is planned to sit atop the concave design offering panoramic views across the 500ft deep pool.

The city’s head of planning, Dr Margaret Bochel, said of the scheme: “The simplicity of the contemporary design, the curved elevations and the quality of the external finishes result in a building of a high standard of design.

“The Hill of Rubislaw development is recognised as an area having high environmental quality and it clearly attracts investment into the area, which is evidenced through the existing business base within the wider site.”
