Urban Realm springs forth
The spring edition of Urban Realm has arrived so for those yet to pick up a copy Urban Realm editor John Glenday encapsulates what it’s all about below. Don’t miss out!

Describing the latest issue of Urban Realm Glenday said: “Ask anyone what the greatest problem facing the construction sector now is and a paucity of house building is sure to feature prominently. If the problem is readily identified however then the solution is far less clear which is why we’ve turned our attention this issue to some potential solutions.

“This sees us visit the site of Glasgow’s Commonwealth Games Athletes’ Village which is now making its presence felt in the east end of Glasgow and an innovative development of colony homes at Edinburgh’s Leith Fort. Both these schemes illustrate an embrace of high density living on inner city sites, two areas in which the private sector has feared to tread for far too long.

“We take a look at a housing crisis of a different kind on a visit to the former Glen Coe home of Jimmy Savile. Scotland has a proud tradition of haunted houses but the crimes committed by the disgraced disc jockey are of such an order and so fresh in the mind that its demolition has been called for. We weigh up the pros and cons of wielding the wreckers ball.

“One town which has suffered more than its fair share of premature demolitions is New Cumnock, this years Carbuncle winner. We visit this community in distress to see what can be done to stop the rot and restore a once proud town to its former splendour.

“This quarter has been most poignantly marked by the passing of Howard Liddell, the ecological design pioneer who brought awareness of environmental issues into mainstream thinking within the construction sector. It is heartening to learn that his good work lives on in both Gaia Architects and SEDA.”
