Scottish Hydro Electric Transmission have progressed plans to roll out a major expansion of substation capacity in the north of Scotland with the appointment of four construction consortia to a £600m framework.

Miller Quattro, Balfour Beatty, Alstom and Bam Nutal will all progress different aspects of the ambitious plan to upgrade the transmission network by connecting an expanding range of renewable energy sources to the wider grid.

Chris Webster, chief executive, Miller Construction, said: “We are delighted to have secured a place on this substation delivery framework. Miller Quatro is a new entrant to the market place and we are looking forward to working with our joint venture partners to contribute towards the delivery of infrastructure required to support the connection of renewables.”

David Gardner, SSE’s director of transmission, added: “The award of these contracts, with some of the industry’s global experts will help deliver the infrastructure that is needed to support the connection of renewables, as well as providing a boost to the local communities where we are operating.”

The need to connect the ever-growing generation capacity of the north with areas of demand in the south has necessitated the need for Scottish Power to construct a controversial transmission line between Beauly and Denny.
