Gaia Architects publish Howard Liddell obituary
Gaia Architects have published an obituary for their ‘inspirational’ late-founder, Howard Liddell, who passed away last month at the age of 67 just days before receiving an OBE for services to ecological design.

Liddell’s career encompassed ten years spent in academia, first as a director of research at the Hull School of Architecture and then as a guest professor in building technology at Oslo.

It was here that Liddell formed the Green Association of Idealistic Architects (Gaia) in Norway before going on to establish the Scottish practice in the early eighties, overseeing key projects such as Acharacle Primary School, Glentress Visitor Centre and Plummerswood (the first passivehouse certified brettstapel house in the UK).

In 1991 Liddell also co-founded the Scottish Ecological Design Association and maintained an active role in charitable initiatives throughout his career.

In a statement Gaia said: “Howard’s passionate and tireless contribution to the world of ecological design debate, research, publication and built works will be sorely missed by all who had the pleasure and honour of working for and alongside him.

“He was an inspiration.”

Rest in peace, Howard. You left a very valuable legacy of pragmatism in the fuzzy world of 'sustainability'. A pleasure to work with you, albeit briefly, and a great lesson learned on my part.
