Braehead expansion application submitted
Capital Shopping Centres, owners of the Braehead shopping complex on the outskirts of Glasgow, have submitted a planning application to Renfrewshire Council for a £200m mixed use development at the centre.

This will include a range of new retail and leisure facilities, including a department store, arena, public square, restaurants and a 200 bed hotel to the west of the existing centre – all designed by Chapman Taylor.

The plans also entail improvements to the river edge with new landscaped walkways and creation of a new transport interchange which can accommodate the long mooted Fastlink service.

Peter Beagley, regional centre director for CSC said: “This will be one of the biggest private investment projects in Scotland for a long time. With planning consent, we will be creating thousands of jobs at a time of economic downturn and it will be a boost not only to Renfrewshire, but also to the wider West of Scotland economy.”

Like a grossly over scaled version of this: http://www.panterhudspith.com/projects/retail/davygate.html
Big of a mixed bag of styles and materials

I think in an instance like this a 'bit of a mixed bag of styles' is exactly the right approach. The image above shows how the buildings are separate from each other and form a new urban space, almost like a public square in a city (I know it's clearly not, before anyone jumps on that!). If all the buildings were of the same style elevationally, then the overall appearance would likely lack character and would be poorer as a result.

On a more important note, this is another development to suck life out of towns and even the City centre.

Astonishing. And politicians feign bafflement that our town centres are withering away as slew after slew of these horrors are approved.

Whilst I agree that out of town shopping centres are playing a part in the decline of the high street
I suspect that Internet Shopping is playing and equally big part

The re-opening of the excellent Clydebuilt Museum should be a key part of any agreement to expand Braehead. It could surely be at least partially paid for out of the taxes shops would be paying for opening there? It was one of the best museums in Glasgow. Not sure of what the annual cost of running it must have been.
