George Square shortlist announced
Glasgow City Council has revealed the names of the six shortlisted practices chosen to further develop their ideas for the central public space.

They are John McAslan, Gustafson porter, JM Architects, James Corner Field Operations, Burns + Nice and Agence Ter.

Each team will spend the Christmas holidays burnishing their proposals in order to submit finalised plans on 7 January.

Asked by Urban Realm if there were any plans available to view a GCC spokesperson responded: “No as we are not at that stage.  These organisations have been shortlisted on the basis of their pre-qualification response.

"The ITDC is the current stage and doesn't close until 7 January 2013.”

Interesting shortlist of international practices, all of which have a good track record... Still, I would have much rather seen an open call for designs over the PQQ first system. Didn't give many local practices a hope in hell...

Good to see Gustafson Porter on the shortlist - their work at Old Market Square in Nottingham sets a pretty good precedent for reclaiming a space like this.

I hope James Corner Fields gets it... The Highline, NY; is great example of reclaiming space and giving people a quality space... on that point what of the abandoned elevated railtracks here in Glasgow??? Why doesn't Glasgow have it's own 'highlines' already??? We could have a lot of great elevated parks, missed opportunity?

I agree with Egbert- Gustafson Porter's Old Market Square is a fantastic piece of urban realm that despite having little in it other than the water feature- is well used and flexible. It's relationship to the streets is greatly enhanced by pedestrianising of two edges- unlike Geo. Sq currently which is a glorified roundabout.
