Bannockburn Heritage Centre has closed its doors for the final time in order to prepare the way for its demolition ahead of completion of Reiach & Hall’s new build which is scheduled to open its doors in spring 2014, the 700th anniversary of the famous battle.

Steelwork for the replacement structure is already in place whilst Mansell Construction are undertaking a series of conservation, enhancement and remedial works to A-listed monuments such as the rotunda, flagpole and statue of Robert the Bruce.

A temporary exhibition space will open to the public shortly to cater for visitors during this intermediate phase.

In a statement the NTS said: “The centre, which was built in the 60s, is an example of one of the many roadside tourist information centres which were built across the country as gateways to Scotland’s heritage. The centre’s interesting design has been recorded by the project and there are plans to produce a small publication which highlights its place in the architectural story of Scotland.”

The original visitor centre was designed between 1964 and 1967 by Boswell Mitchell & Johnston, now BMJ Architects.
