Edinburgh children’s hospital wins approval
The outline business case for a £150m replacement for Edinburgh’s Royal Hospital for Sick Children at Little France has been approved by the Scottish Government.

To be built on a car park adjacent to the existing Royal Infirmary the hospital will replace an existing children’s hospital at Sciennes; along with the department of clinical neurosciences at the Western General Hospital and the child and Adolescent Mental Health Service based at the Royal Infirmary.

Initially proposed back in 2009 the scheme has hit a number of stumbling blocks, not least securing the land on which the new hospital will rise.

Health secretary Alex Neil said: “There have been delays with the new Sick Kids Hospital in the past, due to land and commercial issues with an inherited PFI contract on the proposed site. I am pleased to say that there is now a framework in place to resolve the legal and commercial issues that arose in the original contract.

NHS Lothian will now begin the process of finding a private sector partner to deliver the design, build, finance and maintenance of the new building. This will see them work with the Scottish Futures Trust to plan the procurement process with an OJEU notice expected before the end of the year.

The new hospital is scheduled for completion by 2017.

Given the well-publicised financial nightmares being caused down south by the legacy of PFI hospital projects it seems more than a little perverse for NHS Lothian to be forging ahead with another DBFM scheme. Is there really no other source of funding available?

Clever move to make Malolm Fraser Scotland's Mary Portas, thereby negating past severe criticism of Scottish Futures Trust or the Hub and gagging him for the future?

If 2 artists impressions allow for comment then it is that they are poor. Sick kids, que lots blocks of 1990's colours of orange, greens and blue. Little France is difficult to get to from most of the city and given that southern Fife is in its catchment, it is an even more difficult and expensive place to get to, esp by public transport. The current sick kids hospital is well kept and lovely. I suppose it will be stripped to facade and made into lots of flats, sigh. Parking is an issue around the current site, but also at Little France.
