RMJM submit Glasgow University ‘urban barn’
The University of Glasgow has submitted plans for a new Garscube Learning and Social Space (GLaSS) on its Garscube estate.

Designed by RMJM the £3m facility will incorporate a café, seminar room and tutorial spaces and is intended to consolidate existing functions within a more central and attractive building

Described as an ‘urban barn’ the solution adopted is a low slung pitched roof form intended to be sympathetic to the character of neighbouring properties.

This sports a single homogenous skin to form both walls and roof alongside generous window openings.

Located on a brownfield site the build forms part of a wider masterplan for the veterinary campus prepared by Sheppard Robson and will be built alongside their Centre for Virus Research.
A robust base course is intended to impart a 'floating form' to the structure

I like the hidden gutter. So well hidden they don't appear on the elevations - Also can't see the sky hooks that hold up the roof or are we using structural glass...or perhaps magic.
