Dalmarnock Station plans drawn up
Plans have been drawn up for a replacement railway station at Dalmarnock to provide a space more befitting of the principle transport hub of the 2014 Commonwealh Games.

Transport Scotland are leading a project team managed by Network Rail to see the existing dilapidated halt spruced up with the complete demolition of the 1980s station to make way for a new station complete with lifts.

New lighting will be installed to platform areas and artists will be employed to enliven the grimy embankment walls of the low level halt.

Original Victorian stairwells, ironwork and a raised viaduct will all be retained under the plans to maintain a sense of continuity with the past.

Designed by Atkins the new station building will be clad in a diffuse polycarbonate glazing and boast a striking “folded” roofscape.

I wish all concerned well with this project.

I hope however that we can move away from the dehumanizing 'functionality' of the recent past, and I shudder when polycarbonate is mentioned in this context. Can we not trust the citizens of Dalmarnock with glass?

When I was wee, railway stations were nice places to go, not just because of the anticipation. Shelters actually provided shelter and there were waiting rooms. There were even station masters. Now most small railway stations seem to be petty crime venues you want to get out of as fast as possible and every trace of civilisation that can be erased, has been. I am sorry if this seems like a call for the return of Thomas the Tank Engine, and I know they cant all be like Barters Books at Alnwick but could we not reopen some of the boarded up waiting rooms and sell coffee and second hand books? It might also personalise stations, improve security and perceived security, and create some decent jobs making peoples lives more pleasant. It might encourage more people to travel by train. Perhaps it would be preferable to be a stationmaster than an Architect!

It's a nice thought. Many of the suburban railway stations in greater london that I've been through have been staffed and usually had a wee coffee kiosk and shop or whatever on the platform. Always handy...I guess they are much busier than many of our stations though and so require station staff for safety or something. The trains there still have guards too which is something of a novelty!

Apart from the visuals and the functionals, I hope they can contain the distinctive "aroma" associated with this station. My over-riding memory of travelling through this station in the the late 80's was the dreadful honk and the chocolate brown discharge leaching through the new brick walls. I'm sure the Atkins boys are on to it...
