SNP pledge to fund Clyde Fastlink

SNP pledge to fund Clyde Fastlink
As the Scottish parliament elections draw near the SNP are dangling a £40m carrot before Glaswegian voters with a pledge to back Clyde Fastlink in a bid to retain power.

Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon announced the party was upgrading its backing for the proposal from a “contribution” to stumping up the full whack whilst launching their election manifesto.

The document promises to open up government coffers to the first phase of the planned waterfront link, guaranteeing the dedicated bus link will wend its way to the SECC and Southern General prior to the starting pistol being fired for the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Sturgeon said: “Other parties only talk about Fastlink. The SNP say it’s time to start. The SNP will put in place the funding to make that happen.”

It is the latest manifestation of political manoeuvring in the city after Labour pledged to restart the Glasgow Airport Rail link – canned by the SNP.
Difficult to reach locales such as the Southern general would fall within the scope of the city centre

Glad the snp wont get back in.the fastlink is an insult to Scotlands largest city and its people.it should be light rail.other towns can do it for 70 million bombadier trams,Glasgow wouldnt make a mess of it like Edinburgh has.

Brian, what makes you say this is an insult to Glasgow and its people? And what makes you think that anyone with a brain would support trams after Edinburgh's experience? There's already light rail along the Clyde, and although it obviously doesn't connect with the river as well as it could, stations like Anderston, Partick and Exhibition Centre aren't exactly miles from the river.

I should have made myself bit cleares oops. Not the fastlink into light rail, some of the heavy rail converted to metro/light rail.and disused lines and tunnels.at least we wouldnt have to dig up our streets to get them into the city centre and beyond.thats why edinburgh is in such a mess.it didnt have to be like that at all.The station at secc should be more accessible.from secc site.

Hope you didn't have money on the election Brian. Or on anything, really.
