Labour pledges to resurrect Glasgow Airport Rail Link
With the May 5 Scottish Parliament elections now just a matter of week’s away Labour leader Iain Gray has hit the campaign trail in Glasgow bearing gifts - principally a promise to resurrect the Glasgow Airport Rail Link.

GARL was canned back in 2009 when the SNP government sought to target its scant infrastructure budget elsewhere but eyeing an opportunity Gray reckons he can bring it back from the dead.

The original scheme (complete with a 3DReid designed airport station) was originally costed at approximately £200m but this figure will doubtless have been inflated over the intervening period of inactivity.

Admitting that he didn’t know how he would fund the scheme Gray told the Evening Times: “It is £200million over a number of years. But it is one which is affordable from the capital budget. There are different ways of funding GARL; it can also be done through using Network Rail’s Regulated Asset Base.”

Having seen the transport links and 21st century infrastructure at Heathrow, Gatwick, Standsted and Manchester in recent years, isn't it about time that passengers can board a train at Glasgow Central for Glasgow Airport - when they can already travel direct by rail to Manchester Airport - some 200 miles away. Funding through Network Rail's R.A.B. borrowing facility could reduce the upfront costs of this worthwhile scheme for Glasgow and the West of Scotland. After all £190 million has already been spent on the Glasgow to Paisley rail corridor improvement scheme by Network Rail.

I agree .it does need it.in some form train, light rail.and we dont need to build an elaborate station at the airport either.so it can be done.in conjunction with crossrail with new stationa at gorbals Glasgow x(hub with low level)using city union line.bringing life back to the cross and moving high st stn.would help sustain generation in those areas like collegelands.the city is screaming out for a metro system.
