Buchanan Street redevelopment given go ahead

It will see existing buildings demolished, save for a B listed façade on West Nile Street, demolished in order to make way for a mixed use development of ten retail units, a restaurant and 49 flats.
Finished in blonde sandstone with zinc cladding the Buchanan St elevation rises to a six storey “sail” detail which flairs out, slightly, between the second and fourth floors.
An east west through route will grant pedestrians direct access between Buchanan Street and West Nile Street and will be delineated by feature three storey shop fronts.
Work on the BDP designed scheme will start almost immediately and is scheduled for completion in 2013.
Demolition signage has already sprouted on the condemned buildings
US fashion chain Forever 21 has pre-let 60,000sq/ft of space in the property

Oh great, another mediocre townscape-erasing scheme for Buchanan Street. It'll fit in beautifully with the Galleries then. Like the latter it appears to have no understanding of the rhythm of the street, the plot sizes or how to deal with a slope. Plus it'll irreversibly reduce a great big chunk of city into one massive undifferentiated block - where have we seen that before? Poor, poor show, all concerned.

I am surprised the famous 'Glasgow Z' is still being referred too as this, should it not be the 'Glasgow I'.
It is quite clear that Sauchiehall Street and Argyle Street have lost most if not all face within Glasgow's retail environment. Sauchiehall Street especially has fallen victim to the economic downturn and become a avenue of pound shops and discount toiletry stores.
Not something we as a city should be proud of or GCC should be encouraging.

I thought the offices/shops owners had given up in this recession and also not wanted to pay their rates - so knocking the buildings down were seen as a good idea to cover up the mess this economy is in. No, another stupid development project that is going to make it even worse looking!

Hooray, that this eyesore is going at last, along with the horrible old General Accident office building as well, which might just bring some life back to West Nile Street too.
