Infrastructure investment marks progress for Raploch URC

November 19 2004

Stirling Council and Raploch Regeneration Company have unveiled plans for a £1.1m construction project, the first stage of the reconstruction of Raploch. The project, the third and final phase of work on the Stirling Western Access Road, will involve a major upgrading of 600m of single carriageway, a new roundabout and a surface water drainage system, new street lighting and landscaping. This latest section of road will complete the bypass enabling the redevelopment of the town. The council is now inviting tenders from contractors, and work on the project is scheduled to begin in January 2005.

The road redevelopment is the first step in the overall plan to regenerate the Raploch area which is one of three areas of Scotland to have been granted ‘pathfinder’ Urban Regeneration Company (URC) status. These proposals have evolved through the Stirling Partnership for Urban Regeneration (SPUR) that brings together all the relevant agencies and local community groups.

The improvements in the local infrastructure are the first stage of plans for the area which include the construction of 800 new houses, a new community health resource centre, the reclamation and opening up of the riverside walkway area and the creation of a community and educational campus which will consist of two primary schools, a family centre/out of school care nursery, a community centre, sports facilities and a special educational needs facility. All new homes and businesses are fully IT-enabled, providing a genuinely 21st century environment in which to live and work.

Raploch is the most deprived area in Stirling, and is one of only three areas in Forth Valley that rank in the lowest 5% of all council wards across Scotland. (Source: Scottish Executive Deprivation Index 2002).
