Copper Kalzip has been specified for Kilmarnock’s remodelled Burns Monument Centre to mesh with the heavy use of red Locharbriggs sandstone.

Complex twists and turns in the roof design required a bespoke finish of the durable and attractive material which will oxidise slowly over time through to a mellow bronze and anthracite brown in vertical cladding and green patina roofing.

The previous ornate memorial was torched by arsonists in 2004 and had to be demolished, leaving only the Burns statue and canopy in place. Designed by East Ayrshire Council its replacement provides premises for registration of births, marriages and deaths and the facilities will be available to hire for functions and conferences as well as an archive and genealogy centre.

Controversially the National Trust are proceeding with a second new build £17m burns Centre in Alloway to designs by Simpson and Brown, despite having to close many existing properties due to a lack of funds.
