McAslan in for long haul at Dunoon Burgh Hall
Dunoon’s most prominent building, the grade B listed Dunoon Burgh Hall, will re-open on May 2 with a program of activities including live music, highland dancing, a display of Glasgow Boys paintings and photography from Martin Parr.

These events have been layed on to celebrate first phase completion of the John McAslan Family Trust’s transformation of the Hall into a community arts centre.

This has been achieved through close collaboration with the Friends of the Burgh Hall and local community, demonstrating that community involvement can surmount limited funding.

Designed in the Scots Baronial style by Robert Bryden and first opened in 1874, the Hall holds real significance for Dunoon as John McAslan describes: “I was brought up in Dunoon and remember visiting the Burgh Hall during my childhood.  It is a fantastic piece of civic architecture, with its local green schist stone façades and elaborate internal plasterwork still intact”.

It is hoped that the Hall can be returned to active use by 2011 at a total cost of £1.5m.
