Fresh plans for a revamped Waverley Station have hit planning officers desks in Edinburgh.  Network Rails vision hinges upon a new clear glass roof, designed to allow natural light to flood through to interior spaces, in contrast to the present cloudy, wire safety glass.

Under the £130m plan refurbishment and improvement works would be carried out to platforms eight and nine along with the installation of new furniture and signs and all redundant furniture, buildings and high level walkways would be permanently removed.

In addition works will be undertaken to restore the fabric of the main station building, both within and without, in particular the station’s original ironwork features.

Network Rail are confident that the works can be progressed without disruption to passengers.

If approved groundwork’s could commence as early as Autumn 2009 with demolition of the redundant GPO building and associated link bridge.  The body of works to the main station concourse could be completed by June 2014.
