The judges for the architecture categories in the Roses Design Awards met in Liverpool last month to assess the work submitted. The judging panel was made up of Belinda Irlam-Mowbray, director of RIBA NW, Heather Emery, from the RENEW, Chris Murray, director of the Academy for Sustainable Communities, Paul Spooner of English Partnerships, David Page of Page/Park, Neil Gillespie of Reiach and Hall, Penny Lewis, editor of Prospect and the chair of the panel was Jeremy Dixon of Dixon Jones.

There are four Roses architecture categories: best housing, best public building, best commercial and best regeneration. The best housing category proved to be the strongest category with a range of entries from across the North of England. Two of the projects nominated for the awards involved modular construction. Two Little Baddow Road by GN2 Design and Moho by Shed KM for Urban Splash both involved a prefabricated system, but are supplying very different kinds of homes. The Little Baddow Road is a large suburban detached house that incorporates a timber system, while Moho’s smallest units could occupy about a tenth of the floor space of the Baddow home, but are also built using a prefabricated system manufactured by Yorkon. Staiths South Bank scheme by idp partnership working with Wayne Hemmingway was not nominated for an award, but the project provoked an interesting discussion about semi-urban housing and how it can be organised to create stronger public spaces, a stronger sense of individuality for home-owners and less anonymous environments.
