Places for People home in on Craigmillar
Places for People have received planning permission for 34 new affordable homes in Craigmillar, following an extensive process of community consultation.

The site borders the Thistle Foundation estate, a conservation area of accessible housing created after the second world war for ex-service disabled personnel to live with their families while continuing to receive medical and therapeutic care.

In 2005, the charity passed ownership and responsibility for substantially upgrading each of the existing houses and creating much needed mixed-use housing to Castle Rock Edinvar housing association, part of the Places for People Group.

The proposed 28 flats and 6 houses, designed by Edinburgh architects Smith Scott Mullan Associates, will be a mix of tenures including social rent and Low Cost Home Ownership and will form a link between existing low rise listed buildings and the larger scale contemporary developments being created nearby by PARC.

The homes will be constructed around an enclosed courtyard, with the streets conceived as Home Zones, a Dutch concept for striking a balance between vehicular traffic and pedestrians through the physical alteration of roads.

Accommodation achieves Eco Homes “Very Good” rating and meets Housing for Varying Needs standards.  The development is within the requirements of Secure by Design.
