Design show and awards announced

February 24 2006

The first speakers have been confirmed for the Scottish Design Show, which will take place at the Fruitmarket and City Halls in Glasgow from 25-27 October. The speakers include Massimiliano Fuksas, Thom Mayne from Morphosis and Ted Cullinan from Edward Cullinan Architects.
Fuksas is perhaps best known in the UK for his work on the Salford master plan. However, plans have been mooted for him to work on an alternative stadium for Heart of Midlothian Football Club. Although he was brought up Italian, Fuksas was born in Lithuania where Hearts supremo Vladimir Romanov also hails from. Mayne, of the Californian firm Morphosis, won the Pritzker Prize in 2005 with the Diamond Ranch High School in California earning him particular plaudits. Cullinan is currently working on the new Gateway building for the Botanical Gardens in Edinburgh, although his work on visitors’ centres for both Stonehenge and the ancient Jordanian city of Petra are perhaps the projects for which he is best known internationally. More speakers will be announced soon, along with a wide variety of exhibitions, workshops, lectures and seminars.
The judges have also just been announced for the Scottish Design Awards. John McAslan of McAslan + Partners will chair with Amin Taha of Amin Taha Architects, Shaham Hemmati of SKM Anthony Hunts, Isi Metzstein, Keith Brownlie of Wilkinson Eyre Architects and Raymond Young of Architecture + Design Scotland. The judges will draw a list of nominations on 15-16 February from the entries, which will be announced at the City Halls, Candleriggs, Glasgow on 7 March. Full results will then be announced at Crowne Plaza, Glasgow on 26 May.
