Top of the shops

December 8 2008

Substantial £60m expansion plans have been unveiled by The Avenue shopping Centre, Newton Mearns.

A retail blueprint will see the Centre double in size via expansion across the site of an existing Marks & Spencer store and the former Means Primary.  The growing centre will accommodate 12 new stores, a four storey car park and 24 flats.

The moves mark a rear guard action by centre owners to counter the aggressive expansion of neighbouring retail destinations such as Silverburn which threaten to overshadow local shopping.

Mearns Primary was demolished in 2004 after Historic Scotland removed its listed building status.
