Schoolhill Masterplan, Aberdeen

LDA Design is working in collaboration with Keppie Architects on a masterplan for a new residential development at Portlethen to the South of Aberdeen. The development proposes 1500 new homes and includes a new neighbourhood centre and a large scale recreational parkland with wetlands, which provide a strong identity to the site.

LDA Design has developed a context driven response based on analysis of the existing local context and its landscape characteristics. This has resulted in a final development framework which is appropriate to its surroundings whilst offering a distinct, enjoyable, high quality environment to live in. The parkland and open space forms a cohesive network of green space that links the different housing areas and offers provision for both existing and future communities.

The strategy therefore rests on a green spine that runs throughout the site with layers of larger green spaces, smaller pocket parks and mixed woodland. The large scale parkland spine includes SUDS ponds which provide ecological interest as well as amenity value, creating a focus for the park which will include boardwalks, pond dipping areas, habitat creation, wetlands, bird hides and other incidental elements. Integrated play is located throughout the site, including formal and imaginative play.

Other elements of the masterplan vision include; a new primary school, a community woodland and a business park situated within a woodland framework. Planting appropriate to the location will be key to the success of the design and LDA Design is experienced in designing planting schemes for the harsher climates of Northern Scotland.
