7) Hanley Stoke Framework Plan

erz working with NORD Architects were successful in winning this competition to create a vibrant new neighbourhood at the heart of Stoke on Trent focused around the canal. The framework plan structures built development around the public realm, to ensure overlooking and animation. A green pedestrian spine runs through the core of the site linking the canal to the town centre and connecting to a series of home zone residential streets. The proposals also consider the productive use of the landscape infra-structure. Surface water is managed and treated through a series of reed beds that step down through the green spine. The existing pottery is to be rehoused in a purpose built building. The intention is to capture the excess heat from the pottery kilns to heat rooftop glasshouses for production of fruit and vegetables as a community resource. The masterplan received a commendation in the Placemaking/ Masterplanning category at the Scottish Design Awards 2011. Client: RENEW North Staffordshire
