Roseisle Distillery Elgin

AECOM has been appointed by Diageo, the world’s largest drinks company, to design the first large scale distillery to be built in Scotland for 25 years. The £40m state-of-the-art distillery is being built at Roseisle, near Speyside and is being hailed as the distillery of the future.

AECOM are leading a multi-disciplinary team including engineering, architect and cost consultants to deliver a project that will produce 10 million litres of whisky per year. The distillery is billed as being the most energy efficient development of its type and will bring together old and new technology to provide a model for whisky production in the future.

The design team and client are utilising the latest 3D design technology to enable full visual coordination to take place between the architectural finishes, the structure and the internal process equipment. This also facilitates very early context visuals to be produced along with 3D model plots.

The 3000m² building will contain 14 traditional copper whisky stills and has been conceived as a series of identifiable volumes which reflect the 3 key processes of whisky spirit manufacture: mashing, fermentation and distilling. Being an industrial process, the architectural challenge was to design a building which reflects the distillery process function while attempting to break down the mass, scale and visual impact of the development to respond to its setting.
