Mack is back
The Glasgow School of Art is celebrating successful completion of phases one and two of the £8.7million Mackintosh Conservation and Access project.  Now open to the public the enhancement provides a new shop, furniture gallery and an archives and collections centre.

Overseen by project architects Page/Park with ZM Architects responsible for interior spaces, this marks an important staging post in an ongoing campaign to conserve and protect the Mackintosh Building along with its archives and collections.

Period features have been restored with unsympathetic alterations removed, opening up previously inaccessible areas to the public including an innovative forced air heating system.  The basement area has been opened up to accommodate a permanent exhibition of Mackintosh furniture and expanded retail forecourt.

Phase three will commence in the summer upon completion of which activity will switch to the Newbery tower, Foulis building and library in addition to the Bourdon building.  These will all be demolished to make way for an ambitous new build program in phase four.
