BAA takes off from Glasgow

August 18 2008

BAA, formerly the British Airports Authority, is expected to put Glasgow Airport on the market in the next few months following a competition commission investigation into claims of a monopoly in operation across the north and London.

The airport has fallen behind Edinburgh recently with a lack of business flights and competition from Prestwick in Ayrshire.

Steven Purcell, leader of Glasgow City Council, said: "If the airport is to be sold I hope very much that any potential buyer will consider the need to continue to invest, to make it even more competitive with other airports in the UK and Europe.

"It is vital we have a first-class airport to remain competitive when economies across the world are under so much pressure - and for when the Commonwealth Games come to Glasgow and Scotland in 2014."

Speculation is rife as to the identity of any potential owner with middle eastern sovereign funds and Manchester Airports Group named among possible contenders.
