Cooper Cromar build on Glasgow’s Crown Street regeneration
Craighead Properties together with Cooper Cromar Architects have unveiled plans for a significant new residential development of 369 homes at the junction of Cathcart and Caledonia Roads in Glasgow’s south side.

Comprising five apartment blocks arranged around a central amenity space the scheme sees buildings aligned to maximise views emphasized by large balconies while serving as a continuation of the landmark Crown Street development.

Cooper Cromar wrote: “Feature vertical contrasting facing brick corners emphasise nodal spaces which connect at ground level to the shared surface street and landscaped public amenity space.

“The streetscape to Cathcart Road strengthens the continuation of the Crown Street development both in terms of building line and scale, increasing in height to six storeys in direct response to the feature six-storey build on the corner of Kidston Street and provides a signature or identity for the new neighbourhood.”

Landscape design by Hirst will include large street facing ground floor gardens as well as semi-public internal courtyards.

Due to move on-site this autumn the plans follow an application for a new retail park in the vicinity, submitted last summer.

Given how much the architects are making of the connections to the Crown Street regeneration it would be helpful to see how these proposals relate back to them, and the wider Gorbals area, if they are serious about building a cohesive bit of South Side townscape. At the moment it looks less like a new piece of city and more like a floating series of island buildings surrounded by car parking and loosely defined green spaces. I'm hoping to be proved wrong on this as what the South Side desperately needs is tieing back together through carefully considered urban infill on sites like this. (For the record, I'm pretty sure what it doesn't need is a retail park like the one proposed adjacent to this).

The buildings themselves look good to me - large, simply proportioned windows, a minimal palette of durable looking materials. The block in the lead picture would pass as off-the-beaten track filler in any city in the world. Solid. But as a piece of city building this looks atrocious. No hard edge to either main road, inward facing, suburban, pish.
