Retail park takes the place of historic Johnstone mill
Work to deliver a £3.5m retail park in Johnstone, Renfrewshire, has begun following demolition of an historic shoelace mill in the town.

Paton’s Mill was destroyed in a 2009 fire and is now being replaced by a supermarket, retail store and drive thru by main contractor Bell Building projects.

Claire Donaldson of site owners 4th Consulting, project and asset Managers for the development said: “The redevelopment of the Paton’s Mill site offers an exciting new gateway for Johnstone’s high street. As such it will offer a prime location for shoppers and we are delighted with the progress we are making to transform this site into a thriving destination.

“The contractor has been on site since mid-December and is working towards completion of phase 1 of the development masterplan in Summer 2018.”

Later phases pf work will open up access to the Black Cart River.

Renfrewshire Council must be commended for their compliance in the destruction of Renfrewshires built heritage, listed buildings bulldozed at the drop of a hat for bland retail parks and housing!!

Redundant dilapidated buildings go on fire for any number of reasons. Having seen the rubble after the fire, this is a good deal more positive an outcome (not brilliant but that's the economic reality) than nothing having happened due to unworkable planning legislation sterilising an opportunity for growth. This is what has happened at the Coats-Paton Ferguslie Half-time school formerly Ciba- Geigy Social Club at Maxwellton Road in Paisley. A site and building rubble left derelict for 30+ years and for what precisely?

Wow. From an A-listed building of national importance to a retail park and "drive thru". The fire(s) didn't destroy everything- there was a landmark tower and a key building frontage that could have been retained. I'm sure the site owner tried really, really hard to make restoration viable...but alas, they had to conclude their original plan to blitz it and build a retail park was the only option. But I guess Johnstone is so well endowed with great heritage and architecture it can afford to lose this site and its history entirely. Erm...

Sure its sad to see an old derelict mill being demolished but good to see the area being transformed into something that will encourage people back to johnstone. Too much of this area is dilapidated.

Get a grip, the history of Johnstone, like all of the wider Glasgow conurbation, is agricultural farm land. This development brings employment didn't see too many people lining up paying to walk around dangerous ugly buildings. Life moves on if it didn't they would still be sending kids up chimneys and using candles to light the street.

Road infrastructure can't take it. Bottlenecks from Johnstone and Barrochan interchange. What are you thinking Renfrewshire Council? Just build a retail park and to hell with Johnstone and villages?

No doubt this will kill Johnstone town centre and affect many shops, Renfrewshire council have already turned the very town where there headquarters are based into a ghost town by approving braehead shopping centre.
