Revised Fort William student housing plans brought forward
Threesixty Architecture and developer Cityheart have gone back to the drawing board to pen revised proposals for a student accommodation project at Fassifern Road, Fort William.

Initial plans for the 40-bed accommodation block were turned down by planners last October amidst concern over the scale, mass and height of the planned development in relation to its neighbours.

Revised plans have reduced the fenestration on a gable adjacent to a neighbouring cottage and re-siting the building further away to the eastern edge of the plot.

In their design statement the architects observed: “The building form is less monolithic, becoming two main elements split with a link section between. This serves to soften the massing and provide a more varied frontage. The line of the building steps back towards the cottages, mirroring their plan form and creating a landscaped strip along the edge of the site to soften its impact further.

“In order to further minimise the height and relative impact of the building the roofs are low pitched and concealed behind parapets. This preserves the simple and crisp elevational treatment while reducing the overall height.”

Primary finished for the finished block are render and grey timber effect rain-screen cladding.

Would say it looks a pretty grim building, but its in Fort William so should fit in well...

A mild correction UR - it was not turned down by planners, they recommended it for approval. It was turned down by councillors, for reasons best known to themselves.

I don't know why height is a problem, there are a lot of ugly single floored buildings

Ahh wonderful vernacular architecture. Very cubist, the reich chancellor would be pleased with this box design.

Anytime you write “less monolithic” as a design justification you must know you both got the last one wrong and the current design still isn’t right...
