Contractor appointed for Burrell build

The contract will include repair of the existing building envelope to designs by McAslan & Partners together with the renewal of building services, installation of a new internal access core and full refurbishment of all interiors and landscaping.
This will facilitate an 83% increase in gallery space, together with 35% more storage on the lower ground floor which will also be opened up to the public for the first time. Improved facilities will also include a café, retail and landscaped terraces.
Together these changes will allow more background to be given about the 9,000 treasures within the collection as well as an increase in displayed artwork.
Procurement for the Burrell’s visitor experience contract will take place later this year.
Gallery space will be upped by no less than 83%
More spacious accommodation will allow more background detail to be provided

Could have been worse, a certain other major contractor could have been appointed - as Diane Abbott asked, how much is a Carrillion, anyway?

Kier you say? Carillion you say? that'll be the two top blacklisting companies out there....wonder if GGC considered that or was it cheapest cave wins??

That brings a question - why on earth the museum shut its door over a year ago, if actual construction starts this summer?

Good point Rob, so we've seen the Carillion collapse because of not only their own mismanagement but that of government, and the race to go with what they know...its a water shed moment from the industry and smaller businesses if taken seriously....when will those in power learn to take these contractors to task and not just believe the sales pitch on how they want to, but won't deliver the project! Be interesting to watch the delivery from Kier on local opportunities in the surrounding area and not just a low cost cave for such a fabulous collection of art.

Dont understand the negativity. The Burrell Collection has been wrought with problems ever since it opened. I am entirely confident that Kier are capable of honouring this legacy.
A simple google of 'defects beggar belief' paints a pretty picture about Keir's approach.
Its like the councils dont speak to each other.........D&G are still mopping up the mess they left at DG One - millions of taxpayers money down the drain.... yet somehow the perpetrators pick up top notch projects?
