Edinburgh to benefit from new city park

Overseen by Holmes Miller architects and Matthew Benians landscape architect Treverlen Park will occupy ground vacated by the former school by clearing redundant structures.
Planned works will see historic school gates retained to form a feature entrance with the addition of corten steel park signage to advertise the sites new use.
The design concept for the new park read: “The site arrangement can be divided into built and natural features. The built features include paths, play and street furniture. The natural features include grassland, trees and sustainable urban drainage system SUDS. The park design consists of open space augmented by two tree roundels -a group of trees in a ring. The roundels have clearings within which active play is accommodated.”
New paths will be laid across the 2.5ha site connecting play and street furniture as well as activity spaces such as a climbing boulder, skate park and picnic areas.

Retaining the gates is a great idea. At an event in Hamiltonhill Glasgow locals accepted the school needed demolished but really wished the gates had stayed a touchstone to their and their families childhoods. I hope dementia planning will highlight this and other similar social icons importance.

Excellent! But to be honest it's a replacement park not a new park as the new school has been built on the old park
