£3.7m Knightswood BMX facility on track for European Championships
Work to deliver an Olympic standard BMX track on former playing fields in Knightswood Park has got underway as Glasgow City Council gears up for the 2018 European Championships.

Sister facility to a similar venture in Cathkin Braes Country Park, which will be extended, the track will play home to the Western Titans BMX Club and will include starting ramps of up to eight metres for advanced riders as well as a learner’s track.

Both facilities have been brought forward after the city was awarded the rights to host the European Championships next year when 4,500 athletes will descend on the city for ten days of competition.

Depute council leader David McDonald said: "The venue will be at the heart of the Glasgow 2018 European Championships - the biggest sporting event to be staged in Scotland outside of the Commonwealth Games. Bringing together some of the continent's leading sports, these Championships will celebrate an exciting new chapter in Glasgow's long and illustrious sporting history."

Floodlit the facility will include its own conveniences and changing facilities as well as a meeting room and car park when complete by late Spring.

Please do look realistically at planning the transport impact of this.

This site could be a short & direct route from key rail stations, connected to the canal towpath corridor, and with added bus services along the A82 (The Boulevard) Planning for a high % of the several thousand trips generated by an event moved by efficient means away from the 'focal point' of the site to dispersed car parking and onward connections will mitigate the impact of large numbers of cars all parked close to or at the venue, all attempting to leave at the same time. This also reduces the need to allocate land to car parking at or near the site, which will be empty and sterilised when no events are demanding such capacity (or local residential streets clogged with visitor cars)
