Paisley’s A-listed Russell Institute reborn as office space
Paisley’s landmark Russell Institute has been handed a new lease of life courtesy of £5m of public sector funding to transform the former health centre into office space for Skills Development Scotland and Renfrewshire Council.

A key plank of the town’s bid to become UK City of Culture 2021 the work was overseen by Elder & Cannon Architects working in tandem with main contractor CBC to accommodate 120 staff.

Throughout the work distinctive features have been retained including ornate sculptures, a feature staircase and balcony.

Members of the public will be able to sample at first hand the fruits of these efforts when the building throws open its doors on 2 and 3 September as part of Doors Open Day.

What have they actually done here? Painted it? Looks like the budget only extended to a proprietary reception desk and some circular lights ... E&C must be at a loss

You do them a disservice. Years of neglect and layers of NHS magnolia paint in what is a fairly unique building.

#1 sometimes less is more. But with a percentage fee you wouldn't understand.

The first comment here must have been made in ignorance of what has gone on. Huge, largely unpaid, efforts have gone into first, saving this building, and then in procuring the resources for a start on its renovation. I've known enthusiasts who have literally suffered burn-out over the course - that course extended through and beyond the crash of 200708 when 'all bets were off' for rescue and rehab. A great well done to all concerned. (BTW giving something just 'a lick of paint' can be showing the best of respect for a built heritage treasure. But in this case far more went into rescuing the structure).
