Glasgow City Campus in running for 2017 Stirling Prize
City of Glasgow College’s City Campus is amongst a half-dozen projects vying for the RIBA Stirling Prize 2017 following confirmation of the awards shortlist.

A joint design by Reiach & Hall Architects and Michael Laird the project’s inclusion follows the shortlisting of Riverside Campus, delivered by the same team, last year although it ultimately lost out to Damien Hirst’s Newport Street Gallery, London.

This time around the team must face a fresh batch of challengers in the form of Barretts Grove, London, by Amin Taha + Groupwork; Command of the Oceans, Chatham, by Baynes & Mitchell; Hastings Pier by dRMM; Photography Studio by 6A, London, and the British Museum World Conservation and Exhibitions Centre by Roger Stirks Harbour & Partners, also in the capital.

Commenting on the Glasgow challenger RIBA president Jane Duncan said: “The City of Glasgow College’s new City Campus is an immensely confident contribution to the architecture of the city, and is testament to Scotland’s commitment to invest in high-quality further education. Unique elements like street-front ‘shops’ for the college’s trainee hairdressers and chefs to earn and learn add to the comprehensive facilities that raise the bar for higher education buildings.”

Judged not only on the buildings design success but on the ‘capacity to stimulate’, accessibility, sustainability, client approval and fitness for purpose the award is considered to be the most prestigious in British architecture.

The UK’s best new building will be crowned on 31 October.
