Garnock Community Campus formally unveiled
North Ayrshire Council has officially opened the £37.2m Garnock Community Campus following delivery of a design and build contract by Hub South West Scotland, Kier Construction and JM Architects.

The learning environment offers space for 1,200 secondary spaces, 260 primary pupils and 45 nursery spaces together with a wealth of facilities, including a 25m pool, which will double for community use.

In a statement the architects wrote: “Through a simple material palette of soft-toned, sensitively-detailed, highly textural brickwork, and large-format precast concrete elements, coupled with its low-lying massing, the building takes on a clean, robust and linear aesthetic. This respectfully merges with the landscape and its surroundings whilst maximising natural light, ventilation and views to the landscape from inside the building.

“A key concept and requirement of the brief was for ‘a community building with a school at its heart’ in which it is possible to ‘see learning happening’ throughout the building. Active functions of the building such as dining, community café, auditorium, library, pool and project spaces are clustered at the heart of the building. This allows operation far beyond traditional school times, creating a dynamic core of activity for the whole community during the day and evening, 7 days a week.”

The North Ayrshire campus has a catchment area spanning the Garnock Valley, including the towns of Kilbirnie, Beith and Dalry.

First view of the interior space I thought it was still under construction.
However, beautiful brick exterior! Well done!

I don't understand this trend for leaving services exposed in projects which are totally unsuitable for doing so. This isn't a minimalist museum or a designer boutique - it's a mess and brings what could have been an ok enough project down, likely to satisfy the ego of the architect.

A bit confused, not very attractive and a bit clunky. Don't get the services, just doesn't work at all, agree with previous poster.

Pretty poor commercial looking 'architecture' to me.

Must try harder JM Architects.

Very good design, services are exposed, this is not a house,it will be easier ie cheaper to maintain,I liked it enough to find out who designed it,parking spaces are barely adequate especially during exam time, but the bus drop off could be used at certain times.
