Edinburgh’s Queen’s Hall sounds out funders for £3m glass entrance porch
Edinburgh’s Queen’s Hall has begun the fundraising process to realise a £3m modernization of the historic venue to carry out vital repairs and introduce a new glass-fronted entrance porch.

Mill Design have been brought on board to draft designs for the overhaul, the design brief for which calls for the introduction of a new café-bar, box office and concourse.

It is hoped that a new front door will open up the hall to the street, advertising life behind its walls to the world outside, aided by the installation of new ‘lanterns’ to the façade, while opening up blanked-off windows to draw light inside.

Period features will be retained as a matter of course despite some compromises having to be made, suchy as installing video screens to ensure every audience member has an uninterrupted view. Removable seating will also be installed to allow standing room concerts to be staged for the first time.

Nigel Griffiths, chair of the Queen’s Hall board, commented: “One of the limitations with the Queen’s Hall is that it can look closed when it is open. People will be able to see right into the building in future, as they can at the moment with the Festival Theatre.”

A £3m fund-raising campaign will commence by late summer for the build, in the hope that work can be completed in time for the building’s anniversary in 2023.
