Dundee capitalizes on V&A boost with plans for new creative community
Our Enterprise working in conjunction with HTA Design have filed plans for a second phase of development at Dundee Waterfront, where the former Dundee West Railway Station once stood, as the city gears up to capitalise on delivery of the long-awaited V&A Museum.

Proposals for site 2 will focus on the establishment of a creative community by delivering a twist on more conventional homes and office space via a co-working space, a business accelerator unit and a communal area capable of hosting events and exhibitions.

Targeting start-up businesses these ‘urban offices’ – a single floorplate capable of subdivision into as many as three sub-offices – will sit alongside 117 professionally managed apartments being brought to market by the developers in an effort to seed a new community.

In this way it is hoped to bring design talent to the burgeoning waterfront, lured principally by the creation of Studio Dundee - a co-working space with studio pods, break-out spaces and meeting areas.

Outlining their design approach HTA said that they were pursuing ‘simple gridded masonry elevations’ inspired by a new wave of London developments and will extend existing landscaping on Union Street and Marketgait down through the application site.

Mike Galloway had defended the urban design approach of an earlier, more conventional, Cooper Cromar masterplan for an adjoining plot - saying the council was keen to avoid creating a ‘cacophony of show off’ architecture.

Approved! Great to see the back of that car park. Would love to see GCC do likewise with St Enoch East.

This is the first proposal since the V&A and the railway station sites that has convinced me that the ENTIRE redevelopment of the area is being taken seriously. Previous schemes for other plots in the Waterfront have fallen way below par on quality from firms who should really have known better, but this is a breathe of fresh air - especially image 1.
And there must be money in Dundee, based on the Jag E-Type!
Well done guys on the proposals - there's real promise here!
