Portobello church to become community hub in landmark right to buy decision
Community right to buy policy has been enacted for the first time to allow the transfer of ownership of an urban site following approval of the sale of Edinburgh’s Portobello Old Parish Church and halls to community group Action Porty.

The decision by Scottish Ministers clears a significant hurdle in the group’s efforts to transform the building into a mixed-use community hub and marks the first-time powers contained in the 2003 Land Reform Act have been used in this way for a built-up environment.

Action Porty director Ian Cooke said: “We are delighted to be the first urban community to use the community right to buy, but sincerely hope that we will be the first of many. Given the commercial interest in the property, it is highly unlikely that the community would have been able to acquire the Bellfield site without this support.”

Urban Animation are assisting Action Porty in their audacious bid to take on the property by developing plans for its conversion and extension.
