Plans for Gorgie Road townhouses emerge
Plans have been prepared for the demolition of two redundant industrial buildings and a three storey office block on Gorgie Road, Edinburgh, to make room for new residential infill.

Designed by Bracewell Stirling Connsulting the scheme will provide 19, three storey townhouses bounded by the B-listed St Aidan’s Parish Church and the Water of Leith.

Explaining their design the architects observed: “The housing is intentionally designed in a contemporary fashion finished in a mix of coloured brick, roughcast, cladding panels and metal roofing.

“This combination is intended to resemble the historical industrial use of the site, threading the variety of finishes from the existing residential neighbouring buildings together and at eh same time stating a distinctive architectural feel in this location.

“The houses are carefully sited to avoid overlooking of existing houses and both frame and provide visual security of public spaces.”

Taking the form of terracing and semi-detached homes the scheme will front a new public space with private gardens to the rear.

If you look at the site plan drawing online the proposal for what's actually on Gorgie Road is terrible. Side elevations of houses. There should be at least three storey flats facing here. The development directly across the road is much better. The architects for this scheme have taken no consideration at all of how this addresses Georgie Road. Hope the planning department knocks this back, until they give this more thought.

#3 - this is what is already there https://goo.gl/maps/bTcwqQjxjbr

I get #2's point about the complete lack of interaction with the main road, but I can absolutely see why. The road there is noisy, disgusting and polluted.

What it desperately needs is a framework for both managing this and encouraging redevelopment along it to create a better streetscape. There's been so much piecemeal development over the last 10-15 years, all the way from the old tenement neighbourhood by the Hearts ground, out as far as where it turns into Calder Road, and its all reactive to the road. It improves the lives of the residents in the buildings, but it does nothing to improve the road.

But, then again, this is Edinburgh - nobody is going to separate people from their cars.
